Ramallah
is located ten miles northwest of Jerusalem at an elevation
of 2700 feet above sea level on the crest of a mountain range.
It is known for its pleasant, cool climate and has long been
a popular summer resort. During the 12th century, French Crusaders
built a stronghold in Ramallah and the remains of a Crusader
tower, known as al-Tira, can still be seen in the old part of
town.
Modern Ramallah was first settled around 1550 by Rashed Haddad
and his family. With its lively town center, museums, art galleries,
theaters, parks, a booming restaurant scene and a bustling nightlife,
Ramallah is a fast-growing cosmopolitan town of approximately
60,000 people. |
